Bring on 2018!

As we bid a fond farewell to the past year there is a call to reflect on the best we have seen in 2017 and the inevitable, annual round-ups of the best beauty buys start to emerge. 2017 has seen a number of innovative trends in the beauty world, but perhaps the most notable of all is the way in which celebrities have dominated the beauty market. It would be criminal to cover the beauty highlights of the past year and not mention the likes of Fenty Beauty and KKW Beauty, both of which have generated phenomenal sales. It seems that developing your own beauty line is becoming an increasingly popular venture for the modern-day celebrity and how this will develop only 2018 will tell…

And the new…

To usher in the New Year, The Future Laboratory has released a trend forecast intended to fully prepare businesses to face their future consumer with confidence. In regard to beauty, it is predicted that the emphasis on more natural products will continue to persist and that the term ‘irritant-free’ will become a key watchword in the upcoming year. As closer attention is paid to the ingredients in our everyday cosmetic products, there will be a push for brands to show greater clarity surrounding potential irritants in their products and the term ‘natural beauty’ will be redefined.

There is also a focus on how 2018 will assert the link between make-up and one’s identity. 2017 saw how the world of beauty and social media became more closely intertwined, with the popularity of online make-up tutorials rising to an all-time high. However, inevitably this was preceded by a wave of ‘make-up shaming’ and harmful comments surrounding women’s make-up habits. 2018 looks to challenge this negativity by encouraging women to wear make-up whichever way they’d like and using it as an expression of individuality. This is already being championed by the likes of cosmetic brand CoverGirl, who have used the slogan “I Am What I Make Up” to show make-up’s strong potential to empower women.
