Oprah at the Golden Globes
The 2018 Golden Globes saw the usual mass of celebrities take to the red carpet to celebrate the past year’s dazzling array of films and television programmes. Though this year held a more poignant sentiment, with many famous faces adorning all black attire in support of the #MeToo movement.
This campaign, which originated as a hashtag used to condemn sexual assault, was addressed by Oprah Winfrey in her empowering acceptance speech, as she became the first black woman to win the Cecil B DeMille award. Oprah’s speech, perhaps the most memorable that the Golden Globes has seen, emphasised the importance of speaking out against injustice and that “speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have”. She incited hope through her insistence that a new age was dawning and praised the strength of those who have used their voice to fight against corruption. The message of the evening seemed to call for equality, not only in Hollywood but worldwide. If you haven’t heard the words of Oprah, you can watch them here:
